Boduf Songs "How Shadows Chase The Ballance"

Awesome artist. Quite difficult folk to hear. His name is Mathew Sweet. Minimalist, death aproaching musician, his works are intense and with a touch of doom in his "folk" music. This record is from 2008.

On his second full length release, Mathew Sweet uses the same formula that he has employed previously; one microphone, one acoustic guitar, a few random instruments, a couple of field recordings, and a deft, understated touch with the mixing process. He locked himself away in his home studio (to be honest, his bedroom) and no one else heard a single note until he was finished.

This album is a further step away from the "folk" label, which never seemed all that appropriate to Mathew's work in any case. If you record solo with an acoustic guitar the description is somewhat inevitable. But the results might more rightly be construed as "acoustic death metal" considering the themes of death, alienation, fear, hatred and isolation that are his forte, as well as his affinity for gothic imagery.

Mathew states that the album was mostly recorded at night because there was less background noise to contend with in his neighborhood at that time of day. But if you listen closely you can still hears small bits of rain hitting the window, and cars sliding by on wet roads.

The final result is one of the most unassuming, and engaging recordings of the year. It is intimate, extremely personal, and spectral in presence.

The second full length release from this uk resident follows his Lion Devours the Sun album from late 2006 on kranky. A lot of artists are described as "outsiders" or "underground", but with Mathew Sweet this is actually an apt description as he belongs to no 'scene' and is working on the farthest fringes of the 'music business'.

SPK "Zamie Lehmanni: Songs of Byzantine Flowers"

SPK formed in 1978 in Sydney, Australia, was a 1980s and early 1990s industrial music and noise music group. SPK stands for many names. Probably, the most important of them all, that influenced two members of the band, Graeme Revell and Neil Hill, was Sozialistisches Patientenkollektiv. This album that I'm reviewing is about the post-industrial SPK, more commercially oriented (however, I consider this album to be an exception, since it isn't as synthpop-ish as "Machine Age Voodoo", the previous album). This one is more about electronic orchestral work: it can also be labeled as contemporary classical ambient.

My favourite tracks are: "In the Dying Moments", "In Flagrante Delicto", "Necropolis" and "The Garden of Earthly Delights". The album's lenght is 48 minutes and 10 seconds.
The song "In Flagrante Delicto" is marvelous and features angelic vocals, backed up by haunting and obscure dark ambient sounds.

COIL "Spring Equinox"

Pure magick. Released in 1998, this was part of COIL's releases during solstices and equinoxes. Predictably, they release other three records of this unusual collection: "Autumn Equinox", "Winter Solstice" and "Summer Solstive".
According to my perspective, this one is much more dark than the other ones. It's hypnotic in its own way, dragging you to an infinite field filled with melancholic thoughts. As the other releases of this sort, during 1993 to 1998, COIL were in a more experimental side, evolving to a different stage. They made music with drones, glitches, noise and other awkward methods of self-induced auditive madness (for example, when they made the drone album "Time Machines" I think they didn't sleep for several days). According to wiki: "In March 1998, Coil began to release a series of four singles which were timed to coincide with the equinox and solstices of that year. The singles are characterized by slow, drone-like instrumental rhythms, and electronic or orchestral instrumentation.^[13] The first single, Spring Equinox: Moon's Milk or Under an Unquiet Skull, featured two versions of the same song, the second version of which included a electric viola contribution from a newly inducted member, William Breeze. "
There are two tracks in this release 2 tracks (as mentioned before): "Spring Equinox part 1" and "Spring Equinox part 2". This cd's lenght is around 16 minutes and 37 seconds. I advise you to hear "Spring Equinox part 2", although both songs are, for sure, marvelous. COIL made celestial music, that didn't transcend beings at the same time. Like Jhonn Balance said when speaking about religious views: "spirituality within nature."
