Somewhere in the blogosphere, they said Hocus Tocus sounded similar to Kylie Minogue's Loco-Motion... Forget it. Since when lo-fi indie that's somewhat similar to fellows Wavves, Lovvers and Times New Viking is similar to Kylie? The world still has to go through much stuff for that to succeed. Hocus Tocus are a great emerging band. They are that kind of lo-fi band you seem to have heard before, but still inovative. I advise you to go to their myspace here.
Numbers game is a kind of new DIY aesthetics musical project of Doc Matthews. When I hear his songs, I think of a different Ariel Pink. Like a more audible Ariel Pink with extended tracks, you know. I still don't get why Numbers Game isn't already one of those hype bands. Take this as a fine example: Wavves are an overrated band, so why isn't this overrated too? I only hope Doc Matthews keeps producing songs like these. Check out his website. He's got free MP3 there too [and flacs].
I was wondering on myspace, with nothing that much interesting to speak about when I found the mixtape made by both members of Dazzle Ships (for those who do not know, I interviewed them a month or so ago). Here it is the link. They have good musical sugestions over there.
I enjoyed Dazzle Ships music so much that some weeks ago I decided to interview them. Here it is the final product:
1. Why did you start making music?;
TYLER: Sheer boredom. I borrowed my sister's bass that she didn't play in like 6th grade, but didn't know how to play it. I would just make weird noises with the built in effects on the amp and put the pickups to the speaker making it feed back, I loved that shit. I eventually figured out how to route the amp into my sound card and record it. I had tons of recordings of me just talking with effects on my voice and weird shit like that. and that eventually turned into playing guitar and recording 15 second songs with drum machine and guitar. It wasn't until I started to play music with my friend Travis that I took it semi seriously. We started our first band when we were 15 and he's been in pretty much every band I've been in since. Actually I think Dazzle Ships is the only one he isn't a part of.. HATII: I feel like music was already in my blood because of my family. I started making music because I was constantly surrounded by family members doing some from of it. I grew up with all my brothers in several bands and at least a good 5 instruments just lying around the house. I feel like it really clicked with me when I was around 7. My brother was a huge fan of Led Zeppelin and constantly played Stairway to Heaven; I remember using one of his acoustic guitars and teaching myself the opening guitar part by ear. From then on music has been like a second habit, so far I've learned to play guitar, bass, trumpet, cello and am a beginner at piano and drums.
2. When did the band start (and is this your first band? if it isn't, please mention the bands you had before); TYLER: The band started on December 27th, 2009. Hatii and I were bored one day and jammed and wrote a cool song and then recorded it. and that was that..
I've been in and currently in many bands. including Rapid Youth, Twin Lion, and Norse Horse. HATII: Dazzle Ships is my first band, it's not my first attempt at making a band though. I've tried several times with friends who knew how to play at least one instrument or another. Nothing ever worked out though. Tyler is the first person who fits my style of playing so far.
3. What are your influences?;TYLER: I know that we both want to write energetic, dreamy, catchy, pop songs. But I'm not sure of direct influences, really. We both really like the Cocteau Twins, Atlas Sound, Broadcast, New Order stuff like that. Also bands like Felt, Talking Heads, Wire and a lot of kraut rock bands, guitar wise. We defiantly have a lot of electronic music influence too, there will definatly be a lot more keyboard heavy songs in the future. Hatii listens to a lot of classical music too, I really want her to play some cello on some of the new songs. I am not sure how she feels about that. HATII: When it comes to my vocals I am influenced by Faye Wong and Maaya Sakamoto. Both women have such delicate yet mature voices, and a style all their own. I aim to be somewhere near that category.
4. Have you considered your vocals a bit similar to The Only Ones' (in a good way, of course) ?; I, honestly, haven't listened to enough of that band to tell you if we do or not...I have only heard the "another girl, another planet" song. I will have to look more into that band now, for sure.
5. Have you given many shows up to date?; We haven't played any shows yet, there will be a bunch soon. We want our shows to be very visual also so we are still working out the technical aspect of that at the moment.
-Left: A band photo; -Right: An image which seems to resemble a tunnel [found on their myspace too];
6. If you could choose a band/artist to tour with, who would it be?; This is a tough question......David Bowie. He would have to play all the songs from the labyrinth and let us be his backing band, though.
7. Are you aiming to release an EP or album soon?; Yeah we want to have an album out maybe before the end of this year. We need to find a label first, but we will defiantly have an album written.
8. What country would you like your band to play?; Anywhere in Europe. We would love to play England, France, Spain, Belgium, all those wonderful countries we've never been to. Oh! and Ireland.
9. If you could pick a label which one would you pick?; hmmm This is a tough question.....4AD.
Once again, thank you Dazzle Ships for your time! I'm anxious to hear your upcoming album.
Started not long ago [2009, I predict], this band consists of a duo: Tyler on guitar and vocals and Hatii on bass and vocals. I really like it. Sounds original and refreshing, something that's hard to find these days [cliché talk, I know]. This info was taken from a Vice article: "Dazzle Ships was the name of the brilliant and somewhat unlikely collaboration between modernist painters and army officials during World War 1. It led to warships being painted with complex, colourful, geometric patterns which were meant to confuse opposition viewfinders and periscopes, and make it harder to gauge the speed and position of the ships they were trying to kill. It probably didn’t work very well, but at least it looked great and inspired the awesome artwork to OMD’s underrated Dazzle Ships LP." These guys remind me sometimes The Chameleons' guitars with The Only Ones' bass and vocals. Kind of strange, like an 80's revival band, but that's not that much inserted into the 80's post-punk, kind of difficult to explain [this comparison occurs in their song "Least Resistance". Indie? Yeah, it's indie, just more original than most of the indie bands that I start to find all similar to each other, since "indie" is kind of trendy this decade. You can check their myspace here.
-This is a pic I found on their myspace (the one with the pink dots is also featured there).
Pictureplane isn't that new [he's been active since around 2004]. However, to me it is something new. Signed to Lovepump United, this guy has got some great songs. He also does some cool remixes, I presume. He's also possibly, friend with Teengirl Fantasy and HEALTH [both have been talked about on Serotonin Sounds]. You can check his myspace here.
Below is one dope track of his, entitled "Goth-star":
Alex Klimovitsky and Sebastiano Ferranti are Youthless: a duo that is enthralling some melomaniacs around Portugal and other countries. Their music is difficult to label, however I'd insert them into an indie rock category. The musical instruments they use are: bass, drums, a synth and vocals. Simple as this... This is the band's first EP and it was recorded on Rory Brattwell's (ex-Test Icicles member) studio in London. It's admirable that their songs on this EP kind of followed an order, adding cohesion to the transactions between the tunes, creating a whole that characterises Youhtless' music. Their myspace can be found here.
The track list is the following: 1. In the pacific 2. The Beasts 3. In Motion 4. Out there 5. I guess 6. This must be the place 7. Travel n Pieces
The intro of this EP starts with a psychedelic, mind warping, sound of waves, with vocals and synths blending along the track [the song's name is "In the Pacific"). The second tune, "The Beasts" is more intense, reaching Youthless' distinct signature sounds: a nice bass, fast drums and soft, steady vocals. The third tune, my favourite, "In Motion" has an awesome bass line and tribalesque drums along the whole track, with Alex's vocals making part of this dance between drums, bass and synths. The forth song, "Out There" starts with a catchy synth line, accompanied by Sab's bass, for 30 seconds straight, until the Alex's vocals appear once again and the drums start to be hearable. Around 1:35 minutes the vocals and drums explode. Then, after a while, the bass and the drums maintain playing until the song ends. Quite nice track. The fifth song, "I Guess", is kind of an interlude. The sixth song, "This must be the place", starts with a synth then appears Alex's voice announcing "home is where I wanna be". This track has catchy lyrics, and, of course, as usual, Youthless' drums and bass euphorically blasting along the track. The seventh and final song, "Travel n Pieces", doesn't have any lyrics, but you can hear Alex screaming "hey!" along the track, inviting you to dance. The bass is awesome, sometimes can be mistaken by one of those intense wobble basses you hear on a DnB track or some similar genre. The drums, as usual, are at high tempos, being soften by the synths. At the end of the song, you can hear the bass playing the same sheets that it was heard at the second track, which is kind of funny, since it's like an epitaph to this first Youthless' EP.
Teengirl Fantasy's show was quite calm, proper to their music. Chilling, listening to their beats, while they were having fun creating melodies out of awkward loops, many people got along with it... Some just wanted Wavves to pop up on the stage and start playing though. But I liked it, I thought they were good and promising too. Below is a video of Teengirl Fantasy performing (recorded by João Almeida with my camera):
Wavves final gig of their european tour... how can I describe it? Marvelous, paradoxal, genius. Some hated the show, some loved it. I'm by the side of the ones who fell in love with that decaying spirit. Nathan yelled "boo" and then shouted with the whole crowd "satan! satan! satan!". Pure genius. Download this recording to see for yourself. I couldn't film this show, but a friend of mine used the my camara and recorded almost the whole thing. However, he didn't film many crowdsurfs (don't ask me why...), including when I crowdsurfed twice. There were people outside Galeria Zé dos Bois astonished with the show, some of them even stanted there for like half an hour straight, seeing us all have fun. The setlist wasn't bad... They didn't play "No hope kids"- many people wanted this one to be sang. "To the dregs" was featured, "Wavves" too, in which Nathan crowdsurfed while playing his guitar at the same time!!!... "So Bored" was the last song: at the end there was a stage invasion. This is all recorded by João Almeida with my camera. You can see this below:
Wave Machines started around 2007, in Liverpool. They've released this album since then, entitled "Wave if you're really there". Receiving good reviews, this work has got lots of great tracks to choose from, each of them, peculiar, but with Wave Machines' characteristics within it. They use synthesizers, samplers, drums, guitars, basses, vocals, blending them in their own way: the product is surely marvelous. The tracks are:
1. You say the Stupidest Things 2.I go I go I go 3. Keep the Lights on 4. Punk Spirit 5. The Greatest Escape We Ever Made 6. Wave If You're Really There 7. The Line 8. I Joined a Union 9. Carry me Back to My Home 10. Dead Houses
The album's lenght is around 40 minutes, I believe. My favourite tracks are: "Punk Spirit", "You Say the Stupidest Things", "Dead Houses" and "Carry me Back to My Home". To get this album, click here.
Yesterday I saw two good gigs: Epic Randomness' first gig (at Gala dos Maristas) and Os Passos Em Volta gig at Padaria do Povo. First I'll talk about Epic Randomness' show: they only played one song, which was a cover of "Paradise City" (Guns 'n Roses song, in case you didn't know). It went really well, since it was, basically, their first gig. They were also in front of a big crowd, around more or less 725 people. They behaved really well, I must say... Now it's time they give more shows and make some EP's or merch. While playing, the drummer, Abreu, made some remarkable efforts on improvisations to accompain the guitarrist when he was "showing off". These are some photographs I took from this event: photograph 1, photograph 2, photograph 3, photograph 4, photograph 5, photograph 6, photograph 7, photograph 8, photograph 9, photograph10 and photograph 11.
Next was Os Passos em Volta concert, held at Padaria do Povo, located at Campo de Ourique, in Lisbon, Portugal. It was one hell of a show, one of the best I've seen from this band. They played well, synchronized in their own way, with their distinct sound. I couldn't take any pictures, because I didn't have my camera's batteries loaded. At this gig, there was even a crowdsurf, which was funny and at the same time cool. There was also some mosh held along some songs. These photographs were taken by a friend of mine and are available on Os Passos em Volta's myspace:
Now it's 5th December's gigs turn to be reviewed here on the blog. The bands I got to see were, by the following order: Os Golpes, Beach House, Little Joy, Kap Bambino, DR Ramos (with the collaboration of Ramesh Srivastava - Voxtrot's singer) and Zé Pedro DJ.
The first concert, which was Os Golpes', I only got to hear around 3 of their songs, since afterwards I ran to the waiting line for Beach House's gig in Tivoli. Os Golpes' gig was in Cinema São Jorge Sala 1. However, from what I got to see, they did a fine performance, nothing that was that remarkable either. I'll leave below some videos of their performance (these weren't filmed by me, take that in count):
Beach House's concert was the kind of thing I expected from them: it was filled with their sweet nostalgic and psychedelic sounds, gently embracing the crowd along their songs. Nothing that would make it a memorable gig among this festival however. I filmed a lot of their songs and [I think] I uploaded all of my footage onto youtube. It was their first step on the portuguese soil. They are returning to Lisbon on 17th of March of 2010, to play on Lux (a local disco). Below is one of my films of their concert (it's part 2):
Then it was Little Joy's turn to appear on Tivoli's stage. I got to know that this band formed in 2006 on the portuguese festival Lisboa Soundz. Bands like You Should Go Ahead, Los Hermanos, She Wants Revenge, Isobel Campbell, Dirty Pretty Things and The Strokes played at this festival. It was due to this festival that Little Joy were born: Los Hermanos' singer, Rodrigo Amarante, met with Fabrizzio Moretti of The Strokes and then they decided to form Little Joy. Little Joy's gig was kind of soft, with a good environment among the crowd and the band. I didn't like it that much, since I'm not that fond of Little Joy's music, however, it was a good gig. We left a bit before it ended, to see Kap Bambino. Here is a video [I didn't film it]. When I upload Little Joy's videos, I'll post the links right away.
Kap Bambino was the last "real" concert, before the DJ set at Underground / Garagens do Marquês do Pombal. Noisy, as expected, full of energy: there was a nucleus of fans that continuously, all the time, jumped and moshed. I even had a chance to do some crowdsurf. Kap Bambino had a very good setlist with songs like "Kaos Killer", "Hey" and "New Breath" among many others (their themes included songs from their first records to "Blacklist"). I couldn't film this gig since I was all the time jumping around and enjoying it, has everyone was. Take this is count: this band's gigs are always memorable. Like I said before, everyone was dancing around, but, still, I found 2 videos. There's one of them below. The other one can be viewed here.
Afterwards, people relaxed a bit, with some more soft music playing. I got a chance to take a picture with Caroline, from Kap Bambino too. Suddenly, an alarm sounded: it was DR Ramos' performance beggining. He included some themes ranging from Motörhead to Queens of the Stone Age, mainly mainstream things, compared to the whole festival's purpose. DR Ramos also works on radio RADAR and on Antena 3, I think. He invited Ramesh [Voxtrot's singer] to DJ a bit. Below is a video of Ramesh' on stage:
Finally, came Xutos e Pontapés' Zé Pedro, starring as a DJ. I'll upload a video I have of his performance. He wasn't bad, however he surelly fits more as a guitarrist / rocker than a DJ. He remixed some tunes like U2's "Elevation".
Started playing in 2005, Noiserv is a solo project of David Santos. One of the promisses I see in Portuguese contemporary music, this artist blends many instruments together to create some dreamy melodies. He uses instruments such as: vocals, guitar, melodica, metallophone, bells, synths, acordeon, omnichord, megaphone, effects, toys, musicbox, stylophone and more. His style is certainly unique... alternative, folk, indie are the closest genres I can find similarities with Noiserv's work. He was on the [now dead] portuguese label Merzbau. Check his myspace here.
-David, live.
Watch him perform live the song "Bullets on Parade":
This is one of my favourite albums this year, perhaps. "Jewellery"... what an awesome work it is! I love how they can be at the same time a lo-fi band and keep a classy touch constantly in their records. It's Micachu and her backing band, the Shapes... You got to love them! Even Björk loves them! I first heard of them in 2008, thanks to the Patrick O'Dell's website. They started in August 2008 and released this album in March 9th 2009. This album received mainly excellent reviews. Check these reviews out: Metacritic's, Drowned in Sound's, The Guardian's, All Music's, BBC Music's, FACT Magazine's, The Times' and Pitchfork's. I also advise you to hear this album... It's the debut album of some distorted awkward pop, with some "punky energy" as many critics recall it. It has nothing cliché, it's a new own particular genre, that has made them a hype band with a relevant somewhat-underground indie cult behind them. The track list of this album is the following:
"Vulture" (2:49)
"Lips" (1:21)
"Sweetheart" (0:53)
"Eat Your Heart" (2:20)
"Curly Teeth" (2:27)
"Golden Phone" (2:43)
"Ship" (1:59)
"Floor" (1:22)
"Just In Case" (2:46)
"Calculator" (3:09)
"Wrong" (3:35)
"Turn Me Well" (2:58)
"Guts" (3:12)
"Hardcore" (1:33) is an unlisted hidden track at the end of the record.
My favourite tracks are [not in a particular order]: "Golden Phone", "Sweetheart", Eat your heart", "Curly Teeth", "Wrong" and "Turn me Well". What, I just said I prefer almost half of the album? No wonder! It has lots of cool songs on it. The album's lenght is around 31 minutes and 57 seconds. By the way, last Saturday, this is November 21st 2009, I saw Micachu and the Shapes live at the Loft, here in Lisbon (I also got the opportunity to see a bit of Jon Hopkins show next). It was awesome and what I find more peculiar, is that some of their songs are even more appealing live, like the song "Wrong" for example. I also got the chance to take a pic with them, along with my friends. I'd love to see them live again. Oh, their t-shirts are also original and worth the price! Go grab yourself a Micachu goody! If you want to hear the album, click here. Hope you like this album. PS:I'm going to post a live review about Micachu and Shape's performance at the Loft, when I have enough free time to do such thing.
Next, is the song "Golden Phone" which is about suicide, according what Mica said live:
Big Black's career started around 1982. They didn't found much mainstream success, however they've influenced the early industrial rock scene and have been remarked as a "must" for any person who's into noise. Their use of provocative lyrics garnered much attention. This album entitled "Atomizer" (which is their debut album), as received good reviews .Take this into consideration: All Music gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars. Their brutal slashing guitars and great use of drum machines were widely influencial. This album is included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. I know this sounds awkward, but the singer's [Steve Albini] voice of Gray Matter's vocals. The track list for this album is:
My favourite ones are: "Passing Complexion", "Stinking Drunk", "Big Money" and also "Kerosene". The album's lenght is 37 minutes and 37 seconds. The whole album is really dense and has a lot of cohesion along the song's transitions. Some people who aren't into "noise" should think about this fact: this work has more thoughts behind than it seems. You can get the album here too.
My Bloody Valentine, my bloody valentine... What can we say about how paradoxal sometimes love gets? This album is like a potion of all the antagonic feelings there are in a romantic relationship. All of its atonality and a cacophonic indeterminancy caracterize romance. There's a reason for My Bloody Valentine's debut album to be named "Loveless". The track list is the following:
The songs "Only Shallow" and "Sometimes" are the ones I advise you to hear. "Sometimes" has an ambiguous sense of a shallow happiness, if that's possible at all: the person who hears it doesn't know if it is proposed to make you cry or to make you feel good, kind of in a nostalgic way. When this album came out, there were many music critics and melomaniacs that immediately recognized the importance of this work in contemporary music, particularly in the developing of the "shoegaze" genre and as inspiration for many bands. All music, Rolling Stone, Robert Christgau, NME, Popmatters, The Quietus and many other entities said marvelous things about this album.
Cass McCombs deserves more attention: he's a great musician. Inovating in the folk and alt country fields, this album has received critical acclaim (the album he released in 2007, "Dropping the Writ" was nominated by Amazon as one of 2007's best albums too). Oh, you should also check his official website for some more info, perhaps. The track list is the following:
"I Went to the Hospital" - 5:14
"Bobby, King of Boys Town" - 3:47
"What Isn't Nature" - 4:48
"Aids in Africa" - 5:42
"A Comedian Is Someone Who Tells Jokes" - 3:30
"Gee, It's Good to Be Back Home" - 2:59
"Meet Me Here at Dawn" - 3:39
"When the Bible Was Wrote" - 4:06
"My Pilgrim Dear" - 4:50
"Bedding Down Post Xmas Time" - 3:54
"My Master" - 4:20
My favourite tracks are: "What Isn't Nature", "My Master" and "Aids in Africa". The album's lenght is around 47 minutes, I think. It was released on Monitor Records (now he's signed to Domino Records, by the way). I got to know this artist's music thanks to a pro skateboarder's part in a video of the DVS Shoe Company. The song that played on the pro's [Jason Dill] part was "What Isn't Nature" and it imediatly got stuck in my head. It's original, authentic and seems to be lost in many musical genres, being a misfit among folk music. It's melodic and melancholic and somewhat nostalgic too. Just listen to the album by downloading it right here.
You can hear the song "What Isn't Nature" next, as a preview do Cass' music (in case you didn't know it):
Alex, from this duo named Youthless said in Muso's guide: "Youthless is Sab and I. I play drums and sing and sometimes I play synth lines with my free hand. Sab sings and plays bass through two amps which he alternates between using a footswitch. We also use a bunch of weird FX boxes and other toys. It’s a bit of a strange set up but somehow, amidst all the confusion, we manage to bang out some rockin’ tunes." Like they've said in some interviews, they don't like to be labeled, since it doesn't give them that much freedom to record whatever they want. They're a great promise and are going to launch this month, October this is, a new single through Enchufada records. You can hear next [click on them] the following Youthless' songs: "Golden Age" and "Blondie".
Below is a videoclip of their song entitled "Monsta":
This album is a collaborative effort of experimental indie rock band Xiu Xiu and post-rockers Larsen (this collaboration is entitled XXL and this is the second album they've released). The album came out in May 22 of 2007, released at Important Records (the label that Larsen are on). The first and second tracks have more of Larsen's influence than Xiu Xiu's, as I can hear. But both are very good, smooth and relaxing. They have Larsen's common hypnotic (and somewhat obscure) drone and Xiu Xiu's melodic experiences. The first track is "So Easy, So Cheap" - 2:03- and the second track is "Daydrinking" - 3:53. The third track, which is"Little Mouse of the Favelas" (4:15 minutes), is more melodic and now has Jamie Stewart's distinctive voice. I strongly advise you guys to hear this one. The other 5 songs I haven't heard them enough to comment them, sorry, although I think that I enjoyed hearing "Last in the Society"- 3:40. There are, as you could see, 8 songs:
"So Easy, So Cheap" - 2:03
"Daydrinking" - 3:53
"Little Mouse of the Favelas" - 4:15
"King of Koalas" - 4:50
"The Green Count Tapes" - 4:40
"Last in the Society" - 3:40
"...Nothing About Dwarves?" - 5:45
"Tale of Brother Cakes and Sugar Dust" -9:52
The album's lenght is around 37 minutes and 37 seconds. In this album there's an ecletic variety of musical instruments. I deduce they are the following: electric viola, drums, vocals, guitars, basses, synths, acordeon and some others, I presume... Pitchfork scored it as 7.4 out of 10.0. You can have access to this album here.
Oh, by the way, I've met Larsen this year, May 15 of 2009, when they played at GaleriaZé dos Bois. They had a successful concert. They signed one album of mine too and Julia Kent was also able to sign it.
Below is the 4th track "King of Koalas":
You can hear and view below a Larsen concert I've filmed some months ago, May 15 2009, at Galeria Zé dos Bois:
Panda Bear is Noah Lennox (who also plays in Animal Collective and Jane). Young Prayer is Noah's second solo album. It's been evaluated by many critics as an excellent album. I personally like it, because of its sincerity manifested along most of the songs. Oh, it's also relevant to say that these songs don't have any titles: they're all untitled. I really like the first untitled song, starting with Noah singing and then we can hear (like in all songs) a great acoustic guitar.
Released in 2008, was nominated by many as one of the best albums of that year (SubPop are their label right now, I think). All Music guide gave them 4 stars out of 5; Blender gave them 3.5 stars out of 5; Drowned in Sound evaluated it as 9 stars out of 10 stars; NME gave them 7 stars out of 10 stars; Pitchfork gave them 9.2 stars out of 10 in total. No Age's genesis occured in 2005 and the birthplace was Los Angeles. They are a Noise Pop / Nu Gaze / Indie rock band. They've also released an album in 2007, named "Weirdo Rippers". Personally, I don't like that much this one. When I listen No Age I'm kind of seletive with their songs. There are some that I trully adore; there are others that I seriously hate. However, I'd label them as a great band (which also made some pretty neat t-shirts). The first song on this album, "Miner", is great (Altamont apparel, one of their sponsors, used this song on their skateboard short video documenting the skateboard team's tour to Paris). The second song, "Eraser" is their first single on this album: it has a soft start, that bursts into a supernova of original indie rock that reveal the band's irregular frenzy and catchy music. I could go on talking about the other 10 songs on this album (its lenght is 30 minutes and 35 seconds). The link to Nouns is here orhere or here.
