[gig reviews] Black Bombaim and Mamute at Galeria Zé dos Bois, March 2010

Black Bombaim are a portuguese band that are part of the Barcelos' underground scene. Their psychedelic, stoner apprentices. Tight riffs, fast drums, blazing theremins, absent vocals, all these things make the listener beg for more of their songs. They sure get you high without the need of any drugs: the music is the drug here.
At Z.D.B. they performed what seemed almost like for straight an hour or so. I filmed almost all the gig. It's available on youtube: part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5.

Below is the fifth part of Black Bombaim's concert I filmed:

Mamute consist of a portuguese duo that love and create heavy rock. They entitle it "cliché". It may sound like it is such thing, but not the kind of deal that'll get you bored for sure. You could rock on to their music for days.
Here are some parts I filmed of their gig: part 1, part 2 and part 3.
Below is a part I filmed of Mamute's performance:

[upcoming bands] Numbers Game

Numbers game is a kind of new DIY aesthetics musical project of Doc Matthews. When I hear his songs, I think of a different Ariel Pink. Like a more audible Ariel Pink with extended tracks, you know. I still don't get why Numbers Game isn't already one of those hype bands. Take this as a fine example: Wavves are an overrated band, so why isn't this overrated too?
I only hope Doc Matthews keeps producing songs like these. Check out his website. He's got free MP3 there too [and flacs].

[gig reviews] Owen Pallett at Teatro Maria Matos, 11th March 2010

A great musician, that currently got the media attention due to his latest release (entitled "Heartland"), Owen Pallett is Final Fantasy. He had to change the well-known musical project's name to his own name since it had copyright issues (the game Final Fantasy didn't allow him to keep going with that name).
I got the chance (for only 5 euros!!) to see him perform at Teatro Municipal Maria Matos (located in Lisbon, Portugal).
He had a great setlist ranging from Heartland themes to old ones (like "This lamb sells condos").
I filmed almost the entire concert by the way. I still haven't had enough time to post all the videos, but here are some: part 1, part 2, part 4, part 5, part 9.
Here are some photos of the gig I found on another portuguese music blog.

[upcoming bands] Black Microwave

Although its myspace exists since 2 years ago, it's relatively recent. Black Microwave consist of a one-man musical project that struggles through many musical seas: experimental electronics, 8bit, [a slow] breakcore, etc. The person behind this project is also playing on the band Kimoameba.
The author has released 3 cd's until now. You can check them out on the myspace.
Here it is the myspace.

T.A.G.C. "Iso-Erotic Calibrations"

Strange music, awkward thoughts, bizarre intentions. What else would you expect from some records we keep posting around here? This is the one you need to hear. Experimental electronics, drone, noise, ambient, I think these all caracterize this CD.
Info taken from Wikipedia:

The Anti-Group Communications, or T.A.G.C. are a side project of Clock DVA. Formed in the early 1980s by Adi Newton (although the idea existed as early as 1978), T.A.G.C. (originally The Anti-Group) was conceived as an open-membership experimental multimedia collective, focused on audio, visual, and textual research and production, as well as performance art and installations.

T.A.G.C. audio recordings are released on Newton's Anterior Research Recordings label. The theoretical underpinnings of these recordings, which are often primarily psychoacoustic experiments or carefully-constructed aural rituals, are made explicit in the lengthy liner notes which accompany most releases.

In 2005, a maxi CD 'Psychoegoautocratical Auditory Physiogomy Delineated' was released as T.A.G.C. without Adi Newton's involvement or approval. [1]

After years of silence, Adi Newton with his creative partner Jane Radion Newton re-activated T.A.G.C. for a live multimedia performance at Equinox Festival, London in June 2009. [2]

The acronym T.A.G.C. is also intended to represent the four nucleotides that make up DNA (thymine, adenine, guanine and cytosine).

The track list for this album is the following:
1.Iso-Erotic Calibration 6:52
2.Union with Sirens 7:55
3.Mercurious 4:45
4.Annals of Sancity 5:17
5.Nuerological Engineering 10:23
6.Psychophonophilia 7:43
7.Ethemeral 6:48

My favourit tracks are: "Ethemeral", "Iso-Erotic Calibration" and "Annals of Sancity".
The album's lenght is around 49 minutes.

Boduf Songs "How Shadows Chase The Ballance"

Awesome artist. Quite difficult folk to hear. His name is Mathew Sweet. Minimalist, death aproaching musician, his works are intense and with a touch of doom in his "folk" music. This record is from 2008.
This is the tracklist:
1. (00:05:36) Boduf Songs – Mission Creep
2. (00:04:31) Boduf Songs – Things Not to be Done on the Sabbath
3. (00:05:52) Boduf Songs – I Can’t See a Thing in Here
4. (00:06:55) Boduf Songs – Quite When Group
5. (00:06:06) Boduf Songs – Pitiful Shadow Engulfed in Darkness
6. (00:06:19) Boduf Songs – A Spirit Harness
7. (00:07:06) Boduf Songs – Found on the Bodies of Fallen Whales
8. (00:05:20) Boduf Songs – Last Glimmer on a Hill at Dusk

Get it here. The password is soundwatching.blogspot.com

Info taken from Brain Washed:

On his second full length release, Mathew Sweet uses the same formula that he has employed previously; one microphone, one acoustic guitar, a few random instruments, a couple of field recordings, and a deft, understated touch with the mixing process. He locked himself away in his home studio (to be honest, his bedroom) and no one else heard a single note until he was finished.

This album is a further step away from the "folk" label, which never seemed all that appropriate to Mathew's work in any case. If you record solo with an acoustic guitar the description is somewhat inevitable. But the results might more rightly be construed as "acoustic death metal" considering the themes of death, alienation, fear, hatred and isolation that are his forte, as well as his affinity for gothic imagery.

Mathew states that the album was mostly recorded at night because there was less background noise to contend with in his neighborhood at that time of day. But if you listen closely you can still hears small bits of rain hitting the window, and cars sliding by on wet roads.

The final result is one of the most unassuming, and engaging recordings of the year. It is intimate, extremely personal, and spectral in presence.

The second full length release from this uk resident follows his Lion Devours the Sun album from late 2006 on kranky. A lot of artists are described as "outsiders" or "underground", but with Mathew Sweet this is actually an apt description as he belongs to no 'scene' and is working on the farthest fringes of the 'music business'.

press quotes for Lion Devours the Sun:

"Hauntingly beautiful music that is oft mistakenly labeled "folk." This is something darker, something much more sinister, and Mat Sweet's songwriting muse dives into the troubled waters of a tormented soul and the mysterious forests of the mind. This is the best record of the year, period." Mundane Sounds

"The spare use of his blurry instrumentation is the secret ingredient to the horror in these songs. Sweet packs a punch for such a quiet fellow, and his vortex is indeed a powerful one." Tiny Mix Tapes

"...the visions of human frailty channeled here are dry like a mouthful of dust and stirring in their haunted stillness." The Stranger

Merzbow "Kuja kubato"

I think it's legitimate to entitle Merzbow as the father of noise music. Basically, he was one of the first artists in this genre and who developed it since its start.
This album can be considered more audible than most of his work, because it features drums, that define a rhythm and give emphasis to Masami Akita's computer-produced noise.
The track list is the following:
1.Wind of Pain
2.Pigeon Walk Part 1
3.Pigeon Walk Part 2
4.Dove Festival
5.Bird Droppings on your head
The album has around 50 minutes of intense noise music, that promises to wash your thoughts.
It can be downloaded here.

[Random records selection of the Week] part 3

Once a week someone will choose various records from many musical genres, so that you can check them out for yourself... That person will only specify the genre, the band's name and the respective record. If you want to download them, click on the album cover. This time, our guest was again Filipe Martins. I'm sorry for not updating this section that often, but I haven't got much free time, sincerely.

Aquaparque "É isso aí"

Aquaparque are a kind of recent portuguese musical project (started around the year 2006). The band members are: Pedro Magina and André Abel. It's difficult to label this band, but I'd say their music is more on the experimental / pop side.
This CD was released last year. They received a considerable amount of positive criticism.
The track list is:
1.De dentro de uma baleia
2.Bem bom
3.Ver ao perto
4.Siga para bingo
5.Conte-os
6.Mais lento que a casa dos teus pais
7.Tom de amuo
8.Fantasma
9.Museu de Cera
10.Saúde

-Their main image on their myspace.

My favourite ones are: "De dentro de uma baleia" (which means "From inside of a whale"), "Bem bom" (which means "Really Good") and "Fantasma" (which means "Ghost").
You can get the album here. Its size is around 40 megabytes.
